A Stunning Plug-In Hybrid Built for the Okanagan Lifestyle

Introduction

The 2026 Mazda CX-90 PHEV Signature represents Mazda’s most ambitious SUV to date, combining premium craftsmanship with plug-in hybrid technology in a sophisticated three-row package. With 323 horsepower, standard i-Activ all-wheel drive, and an estimated 42 kilometres of all-electric driving, it promises to deliver the practicality families expect while offering a more engaging driving experience than many competitors in the segment. During my time behind the wheel, I explored everything from its striking Artisan Red Crystal Metallic exterior and luxurious Pure White Nappa Leather interior to its real-world performance, technology, and everyday usability to find out whether Mazda’s flagship SUV truly delivers on that promise.

Exterior Design

Finished in Mazda’s stunning Artisan Red Crystal Metallic paint (Mazda definitely creates a beutiful red), the 2026 Mazda CX-90 PHEV Signature makes a strong first impression with an elegant design that feels more premium than its brand badge might suggest.

Mazda’s Kodo design philosophy is evident in every sculpted panel, creating a sense of motion even when the SUV is standing still. A bold front grille is framed by slim LED headlights, while the long hood and rear-wheel-drive-based proportions give the CX-90 a confident, athletic stance.

Practicality is seamlessly integrated into the design with power-folding exterior mirrors, an auto-dimming driver’s side mirror, a front wiper de-icer, and privacy glass for the rear passengers. Overhead, the expansive power sliding panoramic moonroof fills the cabin with natural light, while a shark fin antenna maintains the SUV’s clean roofline.

Around back, the hands-free power liftgate features programmable height adjustment for added convenience, and rear parking sensors make maneuvering this three-row SUV into tight spaces far less intimidating. The result is an exterior that successfully blends sophisticated styling with thoughtful functionality, making the CX-90 PHEV Signature equally at home in the city, on the highway, or parked outside an upscale resort.

Plug-in Hybrid Powertrain

Beneath the hood, the 2026 Mazda CX-90 PHEV Signature combines performance with efficiency through a sophisticated plug-in hybrid powertrain. A 2.5-litre four-cylinder gasoline engine works in harmony with a 17.8 kWh lithium-ion battery and electric motor to produce a combined 323 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque, making this the most powerful CX-90 in the Mazda lineup.

Power is delivered through Mazda’s smooth-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission and standard i-Activ all-wheel drive system, providing confident acceleration and sure-footed traction in a variety of driving conditions. For everyday commuting, the plug-in hybrid system offers an estimated 42 kilometres of all-electric driving, allowing many owners to complete daily errands or trips to work without consuming fuel.

When the battery is depleted, the gasoline engine seamlessly takes over, eliminating the range anxiety often associated with fully electric vehicles. Recharging is equally straightforward, with the 17.8 kWh battery reaching a full charge in approximately six hours and forty minutes using a standard 120-volt household outlet, making overnight charging a practical option for most owners.

The result is a powertrain that delivers the instant torque and quiet operation of an electric vehicle while retaining the flexibility and convenience expected from a traditional SUV, making the CX-90 PHEV Signature an excellent choice for drivers looking to bridge the gap between gasoline and fully electric transportation.

Interior and Technology

Stepping inside the 2026 Mazda CX-90 PHEV Signature, it’s immediately clear that Mazda has set its sights on the premium SUV segment. The cabin is beautifully appointed with Premium Pure White Nappa leather upholstery, genuine Maple Wood trim, bright metallic accents, and a light cloth dashboard featuring intricate Kakenui stitching. Together, these materials create a clean, airy environment that feels refined and inviting, while the Oyster-coloured headliner further enhances the sense of openness.

Although the white interior gives the cabin a luxurious, contemporary appearance, it also requires a little more attention than darker upholstery, as dirt and everyday wear tend to show more readily—something families with young children or pets may want to keep in mind.

One observation I had was the black stripe in the seats has a white pattern. Initially, I had thought the black stripe was dirty until I realized it was a design. Interestingly, I wasn’t the only one who tried to wipe the seat getting in to the vehicle.

seating

The CX-90’s three-row cabin is configured with second-row captain’s chairs, comfortably seating up to seven passengers while providing a premium experience for those in the middle row. A centre console between the captain’s chairs adds convenient storage, and ventilated second-row seating helps keep passengers comfortable during warmer weather.

carplay

Technology is centred around a 12.3-inch full-colour display that is primarily operated using Mazda’s intuitive rotary controller on the centre console, minimizing fingerprints on the screen while driving. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included, with touchscreen functionality available when connected, offering seamless smartphone integration. Audio quality is exceptional thanks to the 12-speaker Bose premium sound system, complemented by a three-month SiriusXM subscription for added entertainment options.

The CX-90 also integrates Amazon Alexa for voice commands and connected services. During my time with the vehicle, however, I found that asking for Siri through voice control resulted in Alexa responding that she didn’t understand the request. It’s a minor quirk rather than a major flaw, but it’s worth noting for drivers accustomed to relying on Apple’s voice assistant.

Additional conveniences such as wireless smartphone charging, a power tilt and telescopic steering column, and Mazda’s Driver Personalization System—which can recognize drivers (There is an interior camera on the top left of the display that I think records the driver) and automatically recall seating and mirror positions—round out an interior that successfully balances luxury, thoughtful technology, and everyday usability.

Safety and Driver Assistance

Mazda has equipped the CX-90 PHEV Signature with a comprehensive suite of advanced safety and driver assistance technologies designed to provide greater confidence behind the wheel.

Standard features include:

  • Smart Brake Support
  • Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross Traffic Alert
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Lane Keep Assist
  • Driver Attention Alert
  • Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go
  • Traffic Sign Recognition
  • Front and rear parking sensors
  • 360-degree View Monitor
  • Front and rear emergency braking assistance.

During my time with the CX-90, these systems generally operated seamlessly in the background, adding an extra layer of confidence without becoming distracting. The one exception for me was the Lane Keep Assist system. I found its steering intervention to be more assertive than I would have preferred, occasionally making stronger corrections than expected. While some drivers may appreciate the added level of assistance—particularly on longer highway drives—I personally found the system a little too eager. Fortunately, like many modern driver assistance features, it can be adjusted or disabled to better suit individual driving preferences.

Overall, Mazda has struck an impressive balance between active safety and everyday usability. Rather than replacing the driver, these technologies are designed to enhance awareness and provide assistance when it’s needed most, contributing to the CX-90’s confidence-inspiring character on both city streets and the open highway.

Driving Impressions

Out on the road, the 2026 Mazda CX-90 PHEV Signature delivers a composed and refined driving experience, while never letting you forget you’re behind the wheel of a full-size three-row SUV. The plug-in hybrid powertrain provides smooth, effortless acceleration, with the instant torque from the electric motor making the CX-90 feel responsive whether pulling away from a stoplight or merging onto the highway. Paired with Mazda’s eight-speed automatic transmission, power delivery is seamless and confidence inspiring.

Compared with some other three-row SUVs I’ve driven recently, I noticed the CX-90 required more steering input to manage strong crosswinds at higher elevations. During my time with the vehicle, gusty conditions meant I was making more noticeable steering corrections than I expected. While this isn’t unusual for a vehicle of this size and profile, it was something I became aware of over longer stretches of highway.

Where the CX-90 Signature truly excels is in passenger comfort. The front seats remained supportive throughout extended drives, while the second-row captain’s chairs transform the middle row into a genuinely premium space. It’s a layout that makes long-distance travel far more enjoyable than a traditional bench seat.

Although Mazda positions the CX-90 PHEV Signature primarily as a family SUV, I couldn’t help but imagine it serving another purpose altogether. Living in British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley, where luxury wine tourism has become part of the region’s identity, I could easily picture this SUV as a boutique wine touring vehicle. Instead of transporting a large group on a traditional bus, the CX-90 would provide an intimate, premium experience for six guests exploring some of the valley’s award-winning wineries.

The second-row captain’s chairs create a first-class atmosphere, while the quiet plug-in hybrid powertrain and refined cabin make conversations effortless between destinations. Whether it’s a private winery tour, an executive retreat, airport transportation, or a luxury chauffeur service, the CX-90 PHEV Signature feels perfectly suited to delivering guests in comfort and style. It’s a reminder that this SUV’s versatility extends well beyond the family driveway.

The CX-90 PHEV Signature successfully bridges the gap between family practicality and executive refinement, offering a level of versatility that allows it to serve multiple roles without compromise.

Living With It

Spending a week with a vehicle often reveals details that a short test drive simply won’t. These aren’t deal-breakers, but they’re the kinds of everyday observations that prospective owners may appreciate.

One ergonomic quirk I noticed was the design of the driver’s side dashboard air vent – and it is the same on the passenger front seat as well. Because it wraps around the edge of the dashboard near the door opening, I bumped my knee getting into the driver’s seat on several occasions. It wasn’t enough to detract from the ownership experience, but it was noticeable enough that I eventually adjusted how I entered the vehicle.

I also found the Lane Keep Assist system to be more assertive than my personal preference. Compared with some other three-row SUVs I’ve driven recently, the steering intervention felt stronger than expected. The good news is that the system can be adjusted or turned off, allowing drivers to tailor the level of assistance to their own comfort.

Neither of these observations would prevent me from recommending the CX-90 PHEV Signature. In fact, they highlight why spending extended time with a vehicle is so valuable. It’s the little details—both good and bad—that you only discover after living with it, not just driving it around the block.

The MotoBaecker Okanagan Test

Every vehicle tells a different story depending on where it’s driven. Here in British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley, that means winding mountain highways, vineyard backroads, lakeside beaches, ski hills, golf courses, and weekend adventures that often involve a little bit of everything. It’s a region where a vehicle needs to be more than comfortable—it needs to be versatile enough to adapt to an active lifestyle.

The Mazda CX-90 PHEV Signature feels perfectly at home here. It has the cargo space for beach chairs, paddleboards, camera gear, golf clubs, ski equipment, or the wine purchases that inevitably find their way home after an afternoon touring the valley’s wineries.

It offers the comfort and refinement to make long drives over the Coquihalla to Vancouver—or east through Rogers Pass toward Calgary and Edmonton—far more enjoyable, while its luxurious cabin makes every passenger feel like they’re travelling first class.

For me, that’s what defines a great vehicle. It’s not simply about horsepower, technology, or fuel economy. It’s about whether a vehicle enhances the way you live. After spending time with the 2026 Mazda CX-90 PHEV Signature, I came away feeling that it’s more than a family SUV. It’s equally at home carrying a family to the lake, executives to a conference, guests on a boutique winery tour, or friends on a weekend adventure. For drivers who measure a vehicle by the experiences it helps create rather than the kilometres it travels, the CX-90 PHEV Signature earns its place in the driveway.
