TRD Pro v TRD Off Road Premium

For clarity, the 2025 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro is not the same as the 2025 Toyota 4Runner TRD Off-Road Premium. The main differences come down to capability and features.

The TRD Off-Road Premium offers a solid balance of comfort and trail performance, with features like Multi-Terrain Select, Crawl Control, and a locking rear differential, while also adding premium touches such as SofTex-trimmed seats and upgraded infotainment.

The TRD Pro, on the other hand, is built for serious off-road enthusiasts. It comes equipped with Fox high-performance shocks, TRD-tuned front springs, a TRD skid plate, and all-terrain tires, giving it superior suspension travel and durability for extreme conditions.

While the TRD Off-Road Premium is ideal for drivers who want both daily comfort and weekend adventure, the TRD Pro is the go-to choice for those seeking the most rugged, trail-ready version of the 4Runner.

2025 Toyota 4Runner TRD Off-Road Premium: The Walk Around

As you walk up to the 2025 Toyota 4Runner, the first thing that grabs your attention is its stance—tall (73.6″), wide (77.9″), and unapologetically rugged. The bold grille dominates the front, flanked by sharp LED headlights, headlamps with manual level control and fog lamps that pierce through the cloud like a laser.

Step to the side, and you notice the sculpted body lines flowing into pronounced fender flares, housing 18″ off-road alloy wheels wrapped in all-terrain rubber (265/70R18) and a wheel lock set. Bold black capped side mirrors, contrasting black door handles and moon roof round out the agressive stance. The high ground clearance with accompanying running boards and roof rails hint at adventures waiting beyond the pavement. Locked and loaded for the road less travelled.

Moving toward the rear, the squared-off tailgate and tough bumper design make a statement of utility, while sleek LED taillights add a touch of sophistication. The 2025 Toyota 4Runner comes with a tow package, including trailer mount and ball, plus a towing capacity of 6,000 lbs. (2,722 kg) to take not only your friends but the rods, reels and boat to those hidden fishing holes.

From every angle, the new 2025 Toyota 4Runner carries a perfect balance of modern refinement and raw off-road DNA—it doesn’t just look capable, it dares you to take it somewhere wild.

Slide behind the wheel of the 2025 Toyota 4Runner TRD Off Road Premium and the features are similar to the 2025 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro although toned down somewhat.

You’re greeted by a cabin that blends rugged durability with modern refinement. The first thing you notice is the elevated driving position—commanding, with a clear view over the sculpted hood, reminding you this SUV is built for adventure. That’s exactly what I did when I had it.

The dashboard stretches wide, anchored by a bold center 14″ touchscreen that glows with Toyota’s latest infotainment system that includes a free-three month trial with Sirius XM satellite ratio so you can blast your favourite road trip tunes through the 14-speaker JBL audio system including a portable JBL speaker buried in the dash. If that isn’t enough for you, the 2025 Toyota 4Runner has 5 USB TYPE-C Ports (3 Front; 2 Rear) as well as dual phone bluetooth capability, including wireless Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, to stream your carefully curated playlist.

Physical knobs and switches are bold and remain for that tactile, no-nonsense control when trails get rough. Run your hand along the seats, and you’ll find durable SofTex upholstery or supple leather stitched to handle. The rear seats fold flat with ease, opening up a cavernous cargo area ready for gear, dogs, or camping supplies.

Subtle details—like TRD badging, ambient lighting, and premium touches—remind you that while the 4Runner is rugged at its core, it hasn’t forgotten about comfort and style. It’s an interior that feels equally at home in the city as it does deep in the wilderness.

The 2025 Toyota 4Runner TRD Off Road Premium gets a big update under the hood this year, and it makes a world of difference. Gone is the old V6—Toyota has swapped in a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that cranks out 278 horsepower and an impressive 317 lb-ft of torque. On paper, that may not sound like a revolution, but once you get behind the wheel, the extra torque is exactly what this SUV needed. It comes in early, giving the 4Runner a strong, confident pull whether you’re climbing rocky trails, towing, or just merging onto the highway.

Paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission, the new engine feels smoother and more refined than before. There’s still a hint of turbo lag when you mash the throttle, but for day-to-day driving and off-road crawling, it delivers consistent power where you need it most. Even better, fuel economy has improved—owners can expect around 12.4 l/100 km city and 9.6 l/100 km highway for an average fuel economy of 11.2 l/100 km in 4WD models, which is a noticeable bump over the outgoing generation. With a 72 litre fuel tank, the 4Runner will take you approximately 643 km per fill up. That is a lot of back country discover.

But let’s be clear: the TRD Off Road Premium isn’t about speed runs or flashy acceleration numbers. This trim is about balance—combining Toyota’s legendary durability with genuine off-road capability. Features like Crawl Control, Multi-Terrain Select, and a locking rear differential work hand-in-hand with the new torque-rich engine to give you confidence when the pavement ends. Add in a 6,000-pound towing capacity, and this SUV is just as comfortable hauling a camper as it is driving those mountain switchbacks with a boat.

2025 Toyota 4Runner TRD Off-Road Premium: The Experience

I picked up the 2025 Toyota 4Runner TRD Off-Road Premium in Vancouver, B.C. and drove to the Okanagan via Hwy 5 – The Coquihalla (aka The Highway Thru Hell) and BC Hwy 97C, The Connector. It’s roughly a 4 hour trek through the Cascade mountains with speeds varying between 80 and 120 km/hr, full ascents, descents and sweeping turns. Each passage has a long and steady incline to the summit and here is where the power of the all-new 4Runner just shined.

The 4Runner maintains its power as you ascend to the summit. As other vehicles around you begin to slow and the 18-wheelers turn on their hazards for the climb, the 4Runner continues to blaze a trail. Although the normal drive mode is sufficient for the drive, I much prefer locking everything a bit tighter with sport mode for the most control at higher speeds.

I returned to Vancouver and closed the loop travelling back over the Crow’s Nest, BC Hwy 3. This route, although much lower speed and less ascent, is the most scenic route complete with the rivers, hairpins and deep forest. There are even a few off-road climbs to scenic mountain tops where the air is chilled, fresh and you can see for miles above the peaks.

I travelled through every weather pattern (aside from snow) and the 4Runner was spectacular in every way. I even took time out at the top of a mountain to take in the view. While I sat eating almonds, I was joined by a random chipmunk asking to share. That little thing jammed at least 13 almonds into his cheeks before disappearing.

2025 Toyota 4Runner TRD Off-Road Premium: Conclusion

The 2025 4Runner TRD Off Road Premium delivers exactly what fans have been asking for: more usable power, better efficiency, and the same rugged reliability that’s made the 4Runner an icon.

MSRP in Canada approximately $66K
